The Ganga , India's holiest river,became part of the conversation when prime minister - designate Narendra Modi contested the General Election from the seat of

Varanasi,the holy city of India.
He vowed to clean up the Ganges,a river who has got the sacred status in India.It is now one of the most polluted rivers in the World.

It is ranked among the top five most polluted rivers in the world.
It has high level of faecal coliform and chemical pollutants including arsenic and lead.
